FAIR is not Open, and it is not free — but most of it is cheaper than facilities think. Drag the sliders to describe your practice and watch the four FAIR dimensions move against the whole-archive ENA baseline. The lesson hides in the gap: depositing already makes data Findable and Accessible, but Interoperable and Reusable depend on contextual MIxS metadata — and that is where the public archive, and most facilities, fall short.
Global ENA baseline: 80% (grey tick). You are +20 points above it.
Every percentage is the share of your samples that meet a criterion — a countable number, not a vague “fields filled”. The FAIR score is the average of the four dimensions below.
Samples deposited to a public archive100%
Drives Findable + Accessible — an accession in an open archive.
Samples on a real MIxS package100%
Drives Interoperable — a checklist that actually demands fields, not “Generic”.
Samples with geography + collection date100%
Drives Reusable — where and when each sample was taken (the universal context).
Global ENA average is measured whole-archive; a typical small lab is illustrative (deposits, but skips most metadata). Or pick a real center below.

Depositing already buys the world Findable and Accessible almost for free — that part is solved. The archive collapses on Interoperable and Reusable, the MIxS metadata. Capturing it once, at the bench, is what moves a facility from the 80% baseline to 100%.
How the baseline is set
Findable / AccessibleDepositing into the ENA mints a persistent accession in an open, indexed archive — effectively universal once a sample is submitted (~99%)
InteroperableShare of public ENA samples on a real MIxS package, not the permissive “Generic” default — ~66%
ReusableUniversal sample context — geographic location + collection date — about 57%. (A MIxS environment is rarer still, ~13%, but only applies to environmental samples, so it is left out of the cross-facility score.)
Real centersThe “compare to a real center” presets are measured per facility from public ENA samples — see the facility league table
